Description:
This masterpiece, The National Flag of Guernsey on Real Thin-Tailed Sheepskin, encapsulates the rich history and identity of Guernsey. Hand-painted by acclaimed artist Alhaz GK Mushahid after extensive research, this piece celebrates the cultural and historical significance of the Guernsey flag.
Adopted in 1985, the flag consists of the red Saint George's Cross overlaid with a gold Norman cross, representing the island’s Norman heritage and its loyalty to the British Crown. The gold cross draws inspiration from the banner of William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, as depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry. This banner, gifted by Pope Alexander II, symbolized the papal blessing of William's Norman Conquest of England.
The flag's creation addressed the need for a distinct identity, prompted by confusion during international events, and symbolised Guernsey’s unique blend of Norman lineage and British ties. It was officially granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Elizabeth II, Duke of Normandy, and first flown during the 40th anniversary of the Channel Islands’ liberation on Liberation Day, 9 May 1985.
This rendition of premium thin-tailed sheepskin offers a stunning combination of artistic craftsmanship and historical depth, making it an exceptional piece for collectors and enthusiasts.
